Price tells the story, CNC president says

The president of France’s Conseil National du Cuir, Franck Boehly, has said consumers who are concerned about the provenance of the leather in shoes or other products they buy should pay attention to price.

In recent comments to business media outlet BFM, Mr Boehly said it was true that finished product brands were under no obligation to say which country the leather they use comes from, but he said that the price of a product could be an indicator of the levels of environmental and social care manufacturers are investing in.

He said: “A consumer who buys a pair of shoes for €20 cannot expect the that the quality will be the same as in a pair that costs €200. Things [in the global leather supply chain] will change when consumers stop buying those cheap products. This is exactly what happened with eggs from battery hens. Manufacturers never produce items that they cannot sell.”
