Shipping firms and port operators could face legal action in US
The US’s Federal Maritime Commission (FMC) has responded to concerns raised by more than 140 members of Congress about ocean carrier practices that are hampering exports.
In a letter dated March 17, the FMC sought to reassure political representatives that it is working to address congestion at ports. Port problems are affecting the export of a wide range of US agricultural exports, including hides.
The FMC said it is obliging ten shipping companies and 17 port operators to submit information to it on their current policies on demurrage and detention, empty container return, and the availability of containers for the carriage of US exports.
It said it will take action against practices that violate laws regulating ocean shipping.
