Leather’s sustainability contribution should be better known

President of il Distretto della Pelle, Riccardo Boschetti, has said the leather industry’s “fundamental contribution to sustainability” is still little known. Il Distretto is the main representative body of the leather industry in the Veneto region.

Mr Boschetti made these comments in a recent interview with local newspaper Il Giornale Di Vicenza. He said that his organisation supported the efforts of national industry body UNIC to stop the misuse of the term ‘leather’ by manufacturers and users of synthetic alternatives.

He said it was correct to prevent those companies from trying to claim some of leather’s cachet. “The truth is that those materials are neither natural nor renewable,” Mr Boschetti said, “in contrast to the genuinely circular activity that our member companies carry out.”

Tanning leather, he said, is one of the first and oldest examples that exist of a circular economy.
