Turkish minister wants more sheep and fewer cattle
Tanners in Turkey took note recently when a minister in the country’s government called on farmers to raise more sheep and fewer cattle and urged consumers to eat more lamb and mutton and less beef.
Deputy minister of agriculture and forestry, Ayse Aysin Isikgece, recently told local media that she wanted the country’s herd size of 20 million head of cattle to decrease and its sheep herd of 50 million head to increase.
She said the reason was that cattle have a higher carbon footprint than sheep.
