Market Intelligence: time to talk about leather prices
A new issue of the Leatherbiz Market Intelligence fortnightly newsletter, with our exclusive Leather Pipeline report on the leather supply chain, went live on the website on March 16.
In this issue, we learn that, in spite of strong demand for upholstery leather this winter (potentially 20% higher than a year ago) and a ramping up of vehicle production, there are still questions about the wider market. The report says tanners will soon have to new discussions about leather prices and that these will have to be based on the present raw material market.
Fortunately, the report points out, the prices of potential alternatives to leather are having to be adjusted too.
Our Long Read section this time is an advance-look at the Leather Leaders interview from the new issue of World Leather. It features entrepreneur and influential sustainability consultant Federico Brugnoli. He says he would like to see the leather industry move away from backward-looking lifecycle assessment of what it has already produced. Instead, it should adopt forward-looking “lifecycle thinking”, he says, and design sustainability in from the start.
