Meat producers in Australia have cut emissions by more than 50%

Australia’s red meat sector has achieved a 57% reduction in its greenhouse gas emissions since 2005, according to industry body Meat and Livestock Australia (MLA).

In recent comments, MLA managing director, Jason Strong, said the red meat sector was now contributing 10% of Australia’s total greenhouse gas emissions and he insisted continued progress was vital as the industry moves towards a target it has set itself of being carbon-neutral by 2030.

“We have seen many red meat producers, businesses and brands already embrace sustainability and emissions reductions,” Mr Strong said. “A growing number of producers can say their businesses are carbon-neutral and there are carbon-neutral beef brands in the market already. They have embraced the challenge because they see the opportunity.”
