China leads global leather-sector exports, but its share falls
China was still the world’s biggest exporter of leather and leather products in 2019, according to a new report compiled by French national industry body Le Conseil National du Cuir (CNC), but Europe is gaining ground.
The report said China achieved a share of 30.7% of the global market in 2019, but it pointed out that in 2010, the Asian country commanded 45% of global leather exports. It went on to say that Vietnam had picked up the lion’s share of the export business that China had lost and that its south-Asian neighbour was now in second place with a share of 12.5% of the global total.
Just behind Vietnam, Italy took third place with 12.3% of the leather and leathergoods exports globally. France was fourth with 5.2%.
