Italy: no Black Friday relief for struggling leather and shoe sales

18/01/2021

Official figures for the month of November 2020 show that the volume and value of consumer spending in Italy fell, respectively, by 8.4% and 8.1% year on year.

Figures for the month, released recently by the government’s official statistics agency Istat, show that footwear, leathergoods and travel goods fell by 45.8% compared to sales of the same products in November 2019.

Istat said this group of products had shown “one of the most marked declines”.

Commentators said that Black Friday had produced a spike in sales in November in recent years but that, in 2020, measures to control covid-19 and widespread economic uncertainty had held this in check.
