Italian tanning industry elects new president
Italy’s national tanning industry association, UNIC, has elected Fabrizio Nuti as its new president. He takes over from Gianni Russo.
Mr Nuti runs the Nuti Ivo group of tanneries, which is based in Santa Croce. His father, Ivo Nuti, founded the business in 1955, starting out with a workforce of 15, concentrating at first on producing leather for the local shoe industry.
By the time of Ivo Nuti’s death in 2013, the group had expanded considerably, in Italy and overseas. It now comprises Conceria Lloyd, Conceria Everest, Papete and Deluxe. It also has partnerships in Paraguay, Morocco and Hong Kong.
On taking up the presidency of UNIC, Fabrizio Nuti acknowledged that the tanning industry is going through “a difficult moment”. He said he wanted to make “strengthening and enhancing” the sector the theme of his time in office, gaining for Italian tanneries wider recognition of the qualities that have made them “world leaders”.
Mr Nuti’s election came at the UNIC general assembly for 2020 on December 3. At the meeting, the organisation revealed that the Italian leather industry had seen production decline by 29.2% in value and by 22.8% in volume over the first eight months of 2020.
Export revenues, which typically account for more than 70% of total turnover, were down by 30.6% compared to the same months in 2019.
