Two leather companies earn sustainability seal
A regional government environmental authority in Colombia has included two leather companies among the 21 organisations to receive its Sustainability Seal for 2020.
Corantioquia, which operates in the country’s Antioquia department, awarded an AA rating to Cueros Vélez, which makes shoes and leathergoods using leather from its own tannery in Amagá. This is the second year running in which Cueros Vélez has achieved this rating.
The Medellín-based company said it was working hard to improve in sustainability year on year. It pointed out that said it was now reusing 65% of the water it consumes at the tannery, had increased by 90% the substitution of solvent-based chemicals for solvent-based ones, reduced its use of energy in Amagá by 35% and increased its reuse of chrome salts to 90%.
New to the list this year is the company Cueros Y Diseños. The company, which, under the Puro Cuero brand name, produces upholstery leather for automotive and furniture, as well as its own finished furniture, achieved an A rating for the Sustainability Seal.
