Finished leather prices in Turkey have dropped by 50% since June 2019
Leather industry commentators in Turkey have said the prices tanners are able to secure for finished leather in the current market are substantially lower than 18 months ago.
In June 2019, Turkish tanners were able to secure between $2 and $2.50 per square-foot for the top grades of finished sheepskin garment leather, and between $2 and $3 per square-foot for finished bovine shoe upper leather.
By the end of November 2020, the price of these articles, long the mainstay of the leather industry in Turkey, had fallen to between 80 US cents and $1.50 per square-foot for garment leather, and between $1 and $2 per square-foot for shoe upper leather.
This indicates an average price-drop of 50% for garment leather and of 40% for shoe upper leather.
Tanners have said they are unsure what to expect for 2021.
