Leather industry disappointed by Higg Index response
The Sustainable Apparel Coalition (SAC) has responded to questions the leather industry has asked about the high score it applies to leather in its Higg Materials Sustainability Index.
It has refused to suspend the Higg Index score for leather but has said leather industry bodies and companies in the leather value chain can submit data that will, perhaps help, the SAC “improve the tools” it uses to compile the Higg Index.
It used its own blog to set out answers to questions the leather industry raised in an open letter that leading leather industry bodies sent to the SAC on October 8.
The SAC said it welcomed “an open dialogue”, but some of the signatories commented that they were disappointed to have not to receive a direct response. They said it was disappointing that the concerns leather bodies had raised in the letter appeared to merit just an in-house blog post rather than a formal response, even if a route for further discussion is still open.
