Sudan: leather skills can help worn-torn communities heal

05/10/2020

A voluntary organisation in Sudan has reported that 40 women in the city of Kaduqli in the state of South Kordofan, have qualified as leather artisans after taking part in a weeks-long training programme.

Kandaka, the voluntary organisation involved, said teaching the women to make leather and finished leather products was an important step in helping communities affected by war.

South Kordofan is among the regions of Sudan that have suffered violent conflict for most of the last decade, although a comprehensive peace agreement signed in Juba, South Sudan, at the end of August has brought new hope of peace.

A director of Kandaka, Asma Omar, recently told local media that the organisation works with women “because women are the first victims of war”. She said that an initiative such as the leather skills training programme could help “transform local communities into productive societies”.
