Founder members of renewable carbon group include Stahl
Leather chemicals group Stahl is one of the 11 founding members of a new group, the Renewable Carbon Initiative (RCI), which launched on September 23.
The aim of the initiative is to support and speed up the transition from fossil carbon to renewable carbon for all organic chemicals and materials. Other companies are welcome to join the initiative as a member.
RCI describes extracting and using fossil carbon from the ground as “the core problem of climate change”. Its vision is that, by 2050, fossil carbon will be completely substituted by renewable carbon.
Renewable carbon means accessing hydrocarbons from alternative sources, including biomass, direct greenhouse gas utilisation and plastic recycling. The founders are convinced that this is the only way for waste greenhouse gases, plastics and available biomass to become “sustainable, climate-friendly sources of hydrocarbons and serve as part of a more circular economy”.
Stahl’s sustainability director, Michael Costello, is part of the core advisory board of RCI. At the time of the launch, he said: “We have an opportunity to improve our environmental impact and help our partners and customers achieve their sustainability goals. We can succeed in reducing our own environmental impact and that of our customers too.”
