Designer celebrates coats made from Tod’s leather off-cuts

Curtailed as it has been by covid-19, Walter Chiapponi’s first year in the role of creative director at Tod’s has been a success, according to comments the designer made in a recent interview with the Financial Times.

Mr Chiapponi joined the high-end footwear brand last year after decades focusing on ready-to-wear.

His first collection made a positive impression at Milan Fashion Week in February, even though, the world and the industry went into lockdown soon afterwards. He told the FT that collection had been “relaxed, instinctive and effortless”.

He said he was looking forward to continuing to combine Tod’s Italian lifestyle credentials with “a touch of modernity”.

His concern for sustainability has led to one of the first garments he made for Tod’s being a coat made from off-cuts of leather from the group’s footwear production.
Naturally, the quantity of these coats he has been able to make is limited, but the company has confirmed that the product is available in “a few flagship stores around the world”.
