Wollsdorf Leather CEO reacts to Tesla leather-free boast
The chief executive of Wollsdorf Leather, Andreas Kindermann, has issued a hard-hitting response to the news that automotive brand Tesla has made the interior of its Model 3 vehicle completely leather free.
Tesla originally used leather in its interiors but switched to synthetic material in 2017, except for the steering wheel, for which leather covers remained an option. At the end of August, however, the California-based automotive company boasted that the interior of its Model 3 was now “100% leather-free”. Wollsdorf Leather is a specialist supplier of leather steering wheel covers.
Mr Kindermann responded by saying that to replace leather with plastic was not a sustainable solution and he said that this decision would lead to more plastic waste going into the oceans of the world.
He went on to point out that plastic in the oceans is the cause of the death of aquatic mammals, birds and fish, while opting not to use leather will do nothing to prevent meat and dairy cattle from going to slaughter. “If you want to save animals,” he said, “you should stop using plastic.”
