No demand for Turkish sheepskins
Sheepskins are being dumped in Turkey, according to industry commentators, in spite of the fact that slaughter levels at this year’s Eid al-Adha festival at the end of July and beginning of August were around 50% on the previous year’s total, when three million head of sheep and goat were sacrificed.
Despite lower volumes and low prices, sheepskin collectors and traders have been unable to find buyers among double-face leather manufacturers for a majority of the skins from this year’s festival and reports say this material has mostly gone into landfill.
Even attempts by some collectors to recoup some money from wool they were able to shear from the skins before disposal came to little as prices for this so-called ‘dirty wool’ have not risen above levels of 30 US cents per kilo.
