Lack of tourists costs Turkey’s leather garment sector hundreds of millions

02/09/2020

The leather garment sector in Turkey has blamed a decline in tourism caused by covid-19 for a fall in revenues.

Leather garments from Turkey have continued to be produced and to reach retailers across Turkey and overseas. However, producers have said they expect revenues for 2020 to be down by $300 million compared to last year.

Shops selling leather garments to tourists have long been popular in major cities such as Istanbul and Izmir and in other popular tourist destinations such as Kusadasi, Antalya and Alanya.

The months between May and September are the busiest for these tourist spots and for the leather garment sellers who work there. But all have said that visitors this summer have come only in very limited numbers.
