Chinese police uncover multi-million-dollar leather fraud operation
Police in several Chinese provinces have combined to thwart a leather-smuggling operation, seizing bovine leather with an estimated value of $70 million.
The authorities in Guangdong, Zhejiang and Fujian uncovered operations that involved imports of leather with false invoices to mask the true value of the material.
Reports suggested that traders were bringing in finished leather for sale to finished product manufacturers in China but presenting it as lower-value raw material on customs declarations. Police say they discovered more than 300 tonnes of the material.
