Online sales of handcraft products helps lift Tibetan families out of poverty
Access to online shopping platforms has allowed a craft co-operative in Tibet to increase its product range, boost sales and bring more local people out of poverty.
This was the message from Tsering Drolkar, the woman who runs the handcrafts co-operative in the Tibetan village of Karpo, in recent comments she gave to China Daily.
She said that more than 30 villagers now have jobs in the handcrafts workshop, making bags from leather, blankets from wool and other products.
Ms Drolkar said that, since the co-operative started up in 2012, around 120 different people have worked there, including 75 people from low-income families. The increase in income from using traditional skills to make in-demand handcraft products is lifting local families out of poverty, she said.
