First Leather Sustainability Seminar a success
Leather chemicals manufacturer Buckman and World Leather delivered a successful inaugural Leather Sustainability Seminar on July 22.
Tanners, finished product manufacturers, industry bodies, educational establishments, students, machinery manufacturers and other chemical suppliers from all over the world were among the people who listened in to the seminar, which covered questions such as the challenges facing the leather industry in the post-covid world and suggested responses that companies in the leather sector can give.
Presentations for the first session one and session two are available to view and hear online.
Closing the event, Buckman’s strategic marketing manager for leather, Elton Hurlow, told the audience that sustainability was more than a driver of important business decisions or a marketing differentiator.
He said: “It is a requirement of doing business and commitment to sustainability initiatives will determine which companies will survive and thrive in the future. Every decision we take has impact on the environment.”
Dr Hurlow also made the point that, while most people in the industry miss face-to-face contact and camaraderie with colleagues from all parts of the world, there were also benefits from having to hold the first Leather Sustainability Seminar online. “This has been an ultra-low carbon footprint event,” he said.
