UNIDO joins PTA campaign on hide preservation ahead of Eid al-Adha
The United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) is working with the Pakistan Tanners’ Association (PTA) on a campaign to raise awareness on clean production and on hide and skin preservation.
With the Eid al-Adha festival likely to run from July 31 to August 2 this year, UNIDO and PTA hope to run the campaign in time to make a difference to the way traders and tanners preserve the hides and skins that will come onto the market over these dates.
At this festival, Muslim communities slaughter cows, sheep or goats, use some of the meat for a celebratory meal and give some of it away to the poor.
PTA said that at the festival last year, a lack of knowledge, hot weather and poor handling led to damage to around 25% of the hides and skins from animals slaughtered for Eid al-Adha. It said this, in turn, led to losses of around $9 million for tanners and hide traders.
