Some Indian tanneries and manufacturing units resuming work

India’s state government has allowed tanneries and manufacturing units at Calcutta Leather Complex in Bantala to return to work, according to local media.

The report said that some manufacturers who are also exporters with units in the Kasba industrial estate are applying for permission from the state government to resume production.

The manufacturing units are said to have deployed a significantly smaller workforce to complete existing orders and prepare samples for next season. Tanneries are processing raw hides that have already gone unprocessed for more than a month.

Gautam Rajda of Rajda Industries and Exports told India's The Telegraph online paper that they have pending orders for some 30,000 bags and 50,000 wallets. His employees — a workforce of more than 300 which is now operating with around 40 workers — are working to fulfil the orders. He also hopes to manufacture approximately 200 samples to send to clients to ensure continued relationships for the following year.

The paper also reported that around 400,000 pieces of rawhide had gone unprocessed since the lockdown began. Zia Nafis of Zia Hide Skin Agency told the paper his tannery has 50,000 pieces of raw goat skin worth about 4 million rupees now being processed with chemicals and salt.
