Oki Sato designs leather handbag for consumers to assemble

Japanese design studio Nendo has created a handbag designed as a single laser cut sheet, which can be distributed completely flat to customers. Upon receipt, customers fold and assemble the sheet into a three dimensional bag by joining a few rivets through the corresponding holes.

Nendo's founder and chief designer, Oki Sato, said the approach simplifies the manufacturing process and minimises inventory and shipping costs, allowing a broader selection of colours, sizes and shapes. Bags come in leather, which is dyed with plant-based tannin, or felt.

Mr Sato created the “Mai” bag for the Italian online platform Up to You Anthology. The platform is open to both professional and amateur designers, and it provides support from product development to manufacturing management and online distribution.
