Pause in production for UK’s Dartmoor Sheepskins
British sheepskin purveyor Dartmoor Sheepskins has announced the production of its sheepskins products are paused.
Rather than storing sheepskins, the company tans products as it goes along. This, owner Chris Mockridge tells leatherbiz.com, typically leaves production “nimble and quick”; however, closures due to the coronavirus outbreak has left Dartmoor Sheepskins without any stock. The company’s other stock, which includes natural dyes, is still in supply.
“Whilst we're expecting very tough economic times ahead, we feel well placed,” he said. “Our specialisms are very cheap luxury goods, produced in the UK, and speciality plant pigments — which can be hard to find. Both are specialist areas that we hope, to some degree, can survive the turmoil.”
The future is uncertain, he added, as “not only have all our customers been affected by COVID-19, but we still haven't established what the new normal is after Brexit.” He said they are ready to roll out sheepskin production, but timing will depend on the British government’s response.
