All of Sweden’s tanneries use greener fuel
Sweden’s tanneries have all replaced fossil fuel-based energy supplies with greener alternatives, 25 years ahead of the target date set by the Swedish Parliament to make the country climate neutral.
COTANCE, the leather industry’s representative body in the European Union, has promoted the achievement as part of a series helping the public better understand the industry.
One Swedish tannery replaced oil with hydropower in 2012, another uses biomass from wood chips. A third uses biofuel from renewable and fossil-free sources and the fourth replaced its oil-based heater with a heater that uses biobased pellets, reducing its CO2 emissions by 450 tonnes/year.
“Sweden is a good example that illustrates how European tanneries act proactively to implement environmentally friendly measures,” said COTANCE.
