Cattle slaughter falls as Australia rebuilds herd

17/04/2020

Australian livestock farmers sent 8% fewer cattle to slaughter in February this year compared to the same month in 2019; a total of 634,000 head went to abattoirs.

Red meat promotions body Meat and Livestock Australia said figures for March will show “a much greater drop”.

It said good levels of rainfall and forecasts of steady rainfall in key cattle-farming states between now and July had encouraged producers to hold cattle back.
