Tough quarter for Brazilian tanners despite finished leather export increase
Brazil’s tanners exported almost 36 million square-metres of bovine wet blue, crust and finished leather in the first three months of 2020, bringing in revenues of close to $275 million.
Overall, these figures represent a fall of 10% in volume and of 15.8% in value compared to the first quarter of last year.
However, tanners shipped 1.9% more finished leather, 16.9 million square-metres in all, and 17.1% more crust, more than 3.1 million square-metres than in the corresponding period in 2019. The value of finished leather exports was down by almost 10%, but the value of crust exports went up by 9.1%, with figures of $166.5 million and $28.3 million respectively.
Figures for wet blue exports show a decline in volume of 23.1%, reaching 15.9 million square-metres, and a fall in value of 37.2% to reach $62.5 million.
