Leather Chemicals manufacturer Smit & Zoon has published its corporate social responsibility (CSR) report for 2019, highlighting environmental and social achievements and giving details of progress towards the company’s stated mission “to create a socially and environmentally sustainable leather supply chain by 2025”.

Highlights of the report include achieving level 3 certifications from the Zero Discharge of Hazardous Chemicals (ZDHC) programme for the company’s factories in the Netherlands and what Smit & Zoon called “the huge steps made by our innovation team in developing bio-based products”.

Chief executive, Hans van Haarst, said the progress the company made in 2019 was “significant”. He added: “By successfully upcycling hides, a by-product from the meat industry, into a long-lasting material with unique characteristics, we are helping society to move towards a circular economy. I am proud of our achievements in 2019 and look to the future with great confidence. We will continue our investments in improving the leather value chain.”
