Vietnam’s footwear workers face uncertain future

Press in Vietnam have reported that footwear orders for April and May fell 70% and at least 800,000 workers have lost their jobs, perhaps temporarily.

VietnamNet quoted Vietnam Leather, Footwear and Handbag Association’s (LEFASO) secretary general Phan Thi Thanh Xuan as saying these companies are facing “unprecedented difficulties”.

Stock is piling up in warehouses as buyers ask for deliveries to be delayed, and material supplies have been affected. Manufacturers are looking to secure domestic supplies of material.

Around 90% of the footwear and clothing that is made in Vietnam is exported.
