First Birkin bag to feature at London exhibition

27/02/2020

The first ever Birkin bag will be one of the main attractions at an exhibition called Bags Inside Out, which opens at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London on April 25.

Hermès made the bag specially for actress Jane Birkin after a chance encounter between her and then-chief executive, Jean-Louis Dumas, on a flight from Paris to London in 1983. She complained that she could not find a tote bag that suited her and her arranged to make one for her, resulting in the now-famous Birkin bag.

The first bag, which bears Ms Birkin’s initials, is now part of a collection of Hermès and Chanel bags that Catherine B, proprietor of a boutique in Paris called Les Trois Marches, owns. Catherine B will attend the opening of the exhibition as guest of honour.
