Shop locally, Assopellettieri president urges Italian consumers

The president of Italian leathergoods manufacturers’ association Assopellettieri, Franco Gabbrielli, has said he hopes consumers will come to favour products made by his member companies over cheaper imports.

In comments to industry media about changes that might come about following the covid-19 pandemic, Mr Gabbrielli said he was convinced big brands that have been making all their products in China will rethink their strategies. They will probably start looking for manufacturing partners in other parts of the world to guard against future disruptions, he suggested.

He said this could present a series of new opportunities for Italian producers, but he added that he also hoped to see a change in the attitudes of Italian consumers. Just as many Italian consumers insist on supporting local food producers, in spite of higher prices, he said he hoped the same would happen with leathergoods.
