Norwegian-Danish hide traders announce joint-venture

Two Scandinavian hide and skin trading companies, Norilia from Norway and Himmerlandskød from Denmark, have agreed to set up a new joint-venture, Norilia Nordic, which will start trading on April 1.

Norilia Nordic will buy processing services from Himmerlandskød and Norilia and will then sell the hides and skins resulting from that activity to the leather sector.

They have said this development should make it possible for them to create added value from hides and skins from across the Nordic region. “Shared processing and sales of hides and skins, as well as increased volume and a broader assortment, will make Norilia Nordic a larger, more competitive and more attractive supplier of Nordic-quality hides to the international tanning industry,” they said.

Shared management, processing, and sales operations will also result in cost reduction, they added.

Norilia processes around 90% of all Norwegian hides, which is about 270,000 per year, plus around 1 million Norwegian sheep and lambskins per year. Under the new set-up, the joint-venture will also process around one-third of Denmark’s hide resource, a figure of around 150,000 hides. Norilia Nordic will also handle around 65,000 Swedish hides per year.
