Leather garments give boost to Pakistan’s exports

Pakistan’s leather industry recorded growth of 5.3% in export revenues, reaching $446.4 million, in the first six months of the country’s current financial year, July-December 2019.

Tanners contributed $104.2 million towards the total by exporting 9.2 million square-metres of leather, but compared to the same period a year earlier, these figures represent a decline of 12.8% in volume and of 18.7% in value.

However, Pakistan’s exports of finished leather products increased in value from $247.4 million to $274.75 million over the same period, growth of 11%. Industry commentators said this growth came largely on the back of increased exports of leather garments and leather gloves.

There was also substantial growth in footwear exports, with an increase in value of 17.7% to reach $67.4 million.
