29/01/2020
Official figures show that packers in the US produced 25 million tonnes (25 billion kilos) of red meat in 2019, an increase of 3% compared to the previous year. This included 12.3 million tonnes of beef, 1% up on the figure for 2018.

There was an increase in the number of cattle that went to slaughter in 2019, reaching more than 33.5 million, a rise of 1.6% year on year. This compensated for a slight decline in the average live weight of cattle arriving in US abattoirs last year, which reached 610.9 kilos, a decline of 0.4%.
