Tanners in Turkey want lower export duties on semi-processed material

Tanners in Turkey have asked the authorities to cancel export duties on wet blue hides and pickled sheepskin, or at least lower them below current levels.

Owing to a downturn in demand for finished leather in the domestic market, Turkish tanners have worked to build up interest in wet blue and pickled sheepskin. However, the government has imposed an export duty of 40% on the freight-on-board (FOB) price of wet blue and duties of $500 per tonne of pickled sheepskin.

Tanners have complained that this is making it difficult to export the semi-processed material.
