LHCA moves forward with student leather design contest in China

A design competition set up in China last year by the Leather and Hide Council of America (LHCA), in partnership with the China Leather Industry Association, has entered an exciting new phase. The competition is part of LHCA’s ‘Real Leather, Stay Different’ campaign.

At the start of the year, a panel of judges whittled an initial 400 submissions down to 45 shortlisted entries from design and fashion students across China who responded to the challenge of submitting concepts for leather clothing and accessories.

These shortlisted entrants now have three months to turn their design ideas into sample products. These will go on show at an event in May at the Beijing Institute of Fashion Technology at which the winners will emerge.

Prizes on offer include funding and the opportunity to study in the US.

Two tanners, Xingye Leather and Jiaozuo Longfeng Leather, have sponsored the competition.

Commenting on the recent development, LHCA president, Stephen Sothmann, said: “The competition lets us talk with young design students the world over, to see their source of inspiration and to provide the tools to bring their vision to life. We are thrilled to have more than 400 entries this year, to be working in partnership with our colleagues in China, and to have the chance to support the next generation of designers.”
