Shoe industry in Ecuador to launch master’s programme

Ecuadorian footwear body Caltu is to launch a master’s programme for footwear designers. It will formally launch the idea in March with the first course starting in October.

For some years, Caltu has run a diploma course in footwear manufacturing, on which it has worked with the Technical University of Ambato and Mexican footwear industry technical body Ciatec.

In recent comments, Caltu president, Dr Lilia Villavicencio, said her organisation had turned to the same partners when preparing the master’s course. It will involve one year’s teaching and a total of 1,500 hours hands-on footwear design.

Dr Villavicencio said this development has come about because Caltu is convinced that the shoe industry in Ecuador can only survive by increasing the level of knowledge and skills in its workforce.
