Breitling CEO calls Dubai a “mature market” for luxury goods

Breitling CEO Georges Kern has described Dubai as a “mature market” for luxury goods and said there are different clientele whose needs should be responded to.

Mr Kern, who has been traveling to the area for 20-25 years, recalled the changes he has witnessed over the years when speaking recently on Bloomberg’s new show “At the Top”. The Middle East is an important market, he said, ranking it the 4th or 5th region in Breitling’s global portfolio.

He said today there is both a local market and a tourist market, with Chinese tourists making up 40-60% of the tourist market, depending on the brands. Ex-pats, he added, comprise their own segment.

When asked whether it would be Chinese tourists or the local market more likely to drive growth in the area, Mr Kern pointed out that China’s population of 1.6 billion is expected to have 300 million traveling by 2020. While Dubai’s population is not growing as much, he said, it’s important to respond to the needs of the local market and the tourist market.
