Tanners take encouragement from sales-tax exemption proposal

The Pakistan Tanners’ Association has welcomed a government proposal to reinstate zero-rated status for leather.

Earlier this year, the government said reinstating the sales-tax exemption what major export industries had previously had in Pakistan would be difficult, but at the end of November a recommendation to bring back zero-status won support from senior figures.

Tanners have long argued that their exemption from local sales tax is fair because around 95% of Pakistan’s leather and finished leather products go to export markets.
