Optimism persists in Turkey over proposed VW plant

Leather industry commentators in Turkey are hopeful of the country winning a competition (with Bulgaria and Romania) to host a new Volkswagen plant.

While its two rivals have the advantage of being members of the European Union, Turkey feels it has the edge in terms of a more qualified workforce (Fiat, Renault, Ford, Hyundai and Toyota are already making cars there), capacity for industry expansion, good logistics and export opportunities in the surrounding region.

A total investment of €2 billion could be on the table. Volkswagen said it late October that it wanted to delay a final decision on the new plant because of a flare-up of tensions in the region.
