The US Hide, Skin and Leather Association has confirmed double-digit declines in the volume and value of hide exports from the US in the first nine months of this year.

Between January and September, packers and traders exported almost 14.9 million wet salted hides from US abattoirs, bringing in revenues of $578.6 million. These figures represent a fall of 16% in volume and of 33% in value compared to the same months in 2018.

China was the destination of 53.4% of the total volume of wet salted hides exported during the first three quarters of 2019. South Korea took 16.3% and Mexico 14.1%.

For wet blue, the volume of exports in the first nine months of 2019 was close to 2.9 million, bringing in revenues of $305.4 million. In the case of wet blue, the year-on-year declines are of 23% in volume and of 20% in value.

Italy held its number-one position in the markets to which US wet blue hides were shipped in the nine-month period, taking close to 890,000, more than 30% of the total. This compared to China’s 793,000, which was 27.5% of the total. Vietnam was in a very solid third position, taking just over 700,000 wet blue hides from the US over the period. Italy and China both bought 32% fewer wet blue hides than in the same period in 2018. Vietnam’s investment in the material, in contrast, was up by 3%.
