Revealed: the shocking level that hide waste may have reached
12/11/2019
This time, the report says that there are starkly divergent estimates across the industry about the volume of hides going to waste. A figure of several million hides per year is at the lower end of the range observers are suggesting. The figure at the higher end is shocking: it suggests that as many as 50 million hides per year, between 15% and 20% of global production, could be going into landfill now.
Ironically, though, while leather demand is clearly insufficient to absorb all of the raw material coming out of the abattoirs of booming beef producers, it is lower-end hides that are failing to find buyers. The rest of the market has begun to return to something of a balance, Leather Pipeline says, with enough demand for medium- and high-quality hides and an unusually stable price range.
