Ambitious Indonesia to invest in skills

Indonesia’s president, Joko Widodo, has said the country must invest substantially  in  skills  and  productivity if it is to meet its ambition to eliminate poverty and become one of the  top-five economies in the world by 2045.

Speaking at the end of October as he began a second five-year term in office, Mr Widodo said developing Indonesia’s workforce would be a top priority for the government.

This would involve investment in skills, in new technology and in better infrastructure so that communities in all parts of Indonesia can contribute to its industrial output. He acknowledged that this would take time and hard work.

In recent observations about Indonesia’s economy, the World Bank said growth there has been slowing. It said that Indonesia was missing out on manufacturing that was moving out of China to avoid the effects of its trade dispute with the US. Factories are opening elsewhere in the  region but are not coming to Indonesia, the World Bank is reported to have said “because Indonesia’s neighbours are more welcoming”.
