After his playing career ended in 2004, Mr Leonard founded a charity organisation called The Atlas Foundation, which seeks to use rugby to improve the lives of young people in different parts of the world.
On a recent trip to Africa, Kaleza Z-12 rugby boots manufactured in Zambia came to Jason Leonard’s attention. Impressed by the quality, The Atlas Foundation immediately bought 60 pairs to distribute to children that are part of a project it runs in neighbouring Zimbabwe.
Zamleather, a division of packer company Zambeef, is the company behind the Kaleza Z-12 boot. On learning of Jason Leonard’s enthusiasm for the boot, it made a customised Atlas Foundation pair for the former England captain and Rugby World Cup winner.
Commentinig on this rugby success story, general manager of Zamleather, Richard Franklin, said Zambia’s leather industry holds “much promise” and that growth in the sector can be spurred by building markets for local finished leather products that “ride on value addition”.
He added: “What we need is for local entrepreneurs to look at leather as a readily available natural, local product that provides infinite business opportunities for value addition to our local hides.”
Zambeef has five abattoirs and three feedlots located throughout Zambia, with a capacity to slaughter 100,000 cattle a year.
