“This campaign is absolutely necessary,” Mr Russo told the newspaper, “because this is a time in which leather is under constant attack, often based on information that is misleading and false.”
There is so much talk about the need to make the economy ever-more circular, he added, when circularity has always been “at the core of our industry”.
Mr Russo said the material Italian tanners work with is waste from the food industry, which would otherwise be thrown away “without having a second life”.
