Mexico becomes the US’s biggest trading partner

Official figures show that exports from Mexico to the US in the first eight months of 2019 reached record levels of more than $240 billion. This represents an increase of 5.5% compared to the same months last year.

Automotive exports contributed 36% of the total value and were 12% higher year on year.

According to Miguel González Ibarra, an academic at the Mexican National University (UNAM) who specialises in public finances, this growth owes much to a decrease in imports into the US from China.

He said that, over the eight-month period, as a result of the ongoing trade dispute, Chinese exports to the US were down in 23 out of the 34 categories that make up the overall import-export picture between the two.

“This means that, in the course of 2019, Mexico has become the US’s biggest trading partner,” he said. Two-way trade between the US and Mexico had a combined value of $414.2 billion, an increase of 2.2%. Meanwhile, China-US two-way trade over the same period fell by 13.2% to reach $371.9 billion.
