Small French tannery takes up ostrich leather challenge

A small tannery in central France, Maison Soler, claims to have perfected a technique for tanning ostrich skins and is preparing to bring its exotic leather to market.

Company owner, Jorge Soler, has told local media that France’s 20 or so ostrich farms approached him and asked if he would take up the challenge of converting the skins their operations produce into leather.

“I found the challenge interesting,” Mr Soler said. “Ostrich is a very delicate leather and it’s difficult to work with. I wasted a lot of skins at the start before achieving a satisfactory  result, but now I’m ready.”
