Tough first quarter for Bangladesh leather-sector exports

09/10/2019
Bangladesh’s leather sector earned just over $250 million in export revenues in the first three months of the current financial year, July-September.

These figures, which come from the country’s Export Promotion Bureau (EPB), show a fall of 5% compared to the same months in 2018.

Over the three-month period, Bangladesh exported finished leather with a value of $30.7 million, a decline of 25% year on year. The value of leather footwear exports also declined, falling by more than 9% to around $160 million.

Leathergoods showed an increase, however, with exports in this category increasing in value by 25% to reach almost $65 million.

The EPB has set an export target for the leather industry of around $1.1 billion for full financial year, which ends in June 2020.
