Australia’s sheep population down by 6.5%

Red meat promotions body Meat & Livestock Australia (MLA) has said a poor lambing season means the current national sheep flock is around 66 million head, 6.5% lower than at this time last year.

Towards the end of September, according to MLA, lamb slaughter across Australia for the year so far was 21.6 million head, down by 5% compared to this time last year. It also said it predicts 8.5 million head of sheep will go to slaughter in 2019.

It said high demand for Australian lamb and mutton, particularly from China and the US, had offset the price pressure farmers usually encounter in prolonged periods of dry weather; many parts of Australia, especially northern Victoria and most of New South Wales, have experienced severe drought conditions.
